OTTAWA – On the 77th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, the Green Party of Canada honours and remembers the Canadians who, alongside the Allied forces, courageously went into battle on June 6, 1944.
“We are forever indebted to the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who landed in Normandy that day,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “The Battle of Normandy was a turning point of the Second World War but it came at a terrible cost, with more than 5,000 Candian troops killed and some 13,000 wounded.
“Today, as we reflect on the immense sacrifices that were made back then, let’s remember that the freedoms we now enjoy emerged from the selfless sacrifices of all those who fought on our behalf. Peace, democracy, freedom and human rights must never be taken for granted.”
“Our thoughts go out to all veterans, to their families and loved ones; we thank them for their service and dedication.”
