OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada joins with Armenian communities in Canada and around the world to commemorate the Armenian genocide.
“Today we remember all those who lost their lives during this terrible time,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “The suffering endured by the Armenian people can never be forgotten.
“Canadians of Armenian heritage arrived in Canada in the late 19th century, many of them fleeing the massacres unfolding throughout the Ottoman Empire. Since that time the Armenian community has grown and made major contributions to Canadian society.
“Hatred, violence and persecution cannot be ignored nor tolerated. It is incumbent upon all of us to speak out against it, and strive to eliminate it wherever and whenever it occurs. Our thoughts are with the Armenian community today.”
