Resignation of Green Party President

OTTAWA – Green Party of Canada Federal Council President Jean-Luc Cooke has resigned.

Mr. Cooke was elected President in May 2019 for a two year term, but announced this past week that he is unable to continue in the role.

The Federal Council Executive met on Friday, August 6 to accept Mr. Cooke’s resignation and to appoint Vice President Francophone Joey Leckman as President pro tem until the position can be filled.

Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts thanked Mr. Cooke for his service over the past year and a half. “This is a volunteer position that demands a great deal of time, seven days a week, over five time zones. Jean-Luc’s tenure as President has included a federal election campaign, a change in Executive Director, and the start of the Party’s first leadership contest in 13 years,” she said. “I am grateful for the leadership and dedication he has shown throughout.”

The Green Party of Canada’s Federal Council governs the Party on behalf of the membership. The next Federal Council elections will take place in Spring 2021.
