OTTAWA – This year is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the end of the Holocaust. In 2020, we will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter, a document articulating a commitment to uphold the human rights of citizens. In commemoration of both these events, the theme of this year’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day is: “75 years after Auschwitz - Holocaust Education and Remembrance for Global Justice".
“Seventy-five years later, we are reminded of the continued importance of collective action against antisemitism and other forms of bigotry,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “Respect for the dignity and human rights of all people must remain central to Canadian policies both at home and abroad. We must remember the Holocaust and the millions of victims killed by the Nazis and their collaborators we are to ensure such atrocities are never repeated.”
“We must cultivate empathy and tolerance towards the human family in all its diversity. There can be no condoning acts of hatred in our society. Today, as we remember, let us commit to never again stay silent in the face of such heinous crimes.”
