(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement in recognition of World Soil Day 2017:
“Our soil, which is among our most valuable resources, is being contaminated and eroded to unsustainable levels. If we want to continue living in a country that grants us privileged access to nutritious food, it is time we paid closer attention to the quality of our soil,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
Kate Storey, Agriculture Critic for the Green Party of Canada, said: “We strongly believe that government, industry and individuals must each play their part in ensuring our soils are replenished with nutrients and free from contaminants. Government must provide adequate incentives and education for sustainable agricultural practices such as cover crops, penalize industries for contaminating our soils, and provide further education and support towards the benefits of organic production and municipal composting.”
“The Senate Committee report, Soil at risk: Canada's eroding future, warned Canadians as far back as 1984 of the issue of soil degradation. Soils around the world are being degraded at an alarming rate. Canada should lead the way in protecting the fertility of this most precious of resources at home, and pushing for more sustainable management practices abroad,” concluded Ms. May.
