(OTTAWA) September 4, 2017 – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement for Labour Day:
“Today, we reflect on both the accomplishments and challenges of the Canadian labour movement. Labour Day began as a celebration of the labour movement’s fight for an eight-hour day, and later included the many gains unions have struggled for on behalf of all workers: gains in health and safety regulations, parental leave, improved wages, pay equity laws and same-sex spousal benefits.
“Unions remain a critical pillar of a strong economy, and I support updating the Labour Relations Act to include union card check certification for all, anti-scab provisions and first contract arbitration. While the fight for increasing minimum wage is important, there is also a growing consensus among economists, sociologists and politicians that a Guaranteed Liveable Income is a necessary progression for modern democracies.
