OTTAWA – Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) issued the following statement to mark Labour Day 2018:
“Canadians must resist the temptation to simply see Labour Day as the last long weekend of the summer and instead remember its true significance as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the Canadian labour movement and to be aware of the many challenges that still confront working people in this country.
“Unions and labour groups remain a vital force for the advancement of human and workers’ rights in Canada. They have driven progress towards better and safer working conditions, more equitable compensation and a stronger voice for workers in their relations with management.
“On this Labour Day, we call on the government to fulfill its promises on pay equity for women and remind all Canadians to remain vigilant in opposing the erosion of wages, benefits and other hard-won workers’ rights.”
