Green Party Supports Declaration of Commitment

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada supports the Declaration of Commitment initiated by First Nations leaders.

“I want to express my gratitude to Chief Theresa Spence. She achieved what no one would have thought possible: focus public debate on the status of First Nations throughout the country,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands.

“There will be a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ Theresa Spence,” said May.

“The Green Party has signed the Declaration of Commitment alongside the Assembly of First Nations, the Native Women’s Association of Canada and other opposition parties. I hope it can serve as a road map for the colossal task ahead of us,” added May.

“I’m especially pleased to see Native women concerns included in the Declaration.  Its demand for a a National Public Commission of Inquiry on Violence Against Indigenous Women of all ages has been a demand of my party for a long time, ” concluded May.
