(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada released the following statement on Earth Day 2017:
“Last year, Earth Day marked the momentous occasion of the signing of the Paris Agreement, when Canada joined 195 nations in committing to work collaboratively to ensure that global average temperature is held to no more than 2 degrees C above what it was before the Industrial Revolution, and to strive to meet the far safer 1.5 degrees C increase limit.
“One year later, Canada has failed to adopt greenhouse gas emissions targets that comply with the Paris Agreement, and has instead approved fossil-fuel emitting and environmentally disastrous mega-projects, such as Woodfibre LNG on the shoreline of Squamish; the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion project; Petronas Pacific Northwest LNG; and the Site C dam on the Peace River in British Columbia. These projects were approved under a broken environmental assessment process.
“Canada's climate targets remains the one tabled by the Conservative government – the weakest target in the G7. The Liberals’ carbon pricing scheme remains far too weak to drive the necessary shift to clean energy. But taking real climate action is economically viable, and it can unite us as Canadians as we complete this critical work for our children and grandchildren, and all species on this beautiful planet, our only home.
“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I encourage all Canadians to take small steps for climate action every day, and to get outside and enjoy the beauty of nature. Happy Earth Day!”
