OTTAWA – Green Party Leader Annamie Paul has been acclaimed as the candidate for Toronto Centre. In last year’s by-election in the riding, Ms. Paul made historic gains, quadrupling the Greens’ 2019 vote, and placing second with almost 33 per cent of the vote.
Ms. Paul’s roots in the riding are deep. She was born in Toronto Centre, and her mother and grandmother began their working lives as public servants there.
“Too many people in this community have had to struggle under the weight of the pandemic and the economic hardship it has brought on, from precarious jobs, to lack of affordable housing,” said Ms. Paul. “Many residents in our local long-term care facilities have died from COVID-19. Opioid deaths have spiked in Toronto, and this community is among the most affected. Clearly there’s a lot of work to be done.
“This is the moment to complete our social safety net and to prepare for a Green Recovery. I am inspired by the resilience, resourcefulness and pride of the people of Toronto Centre and I am ready to work tirelessly on their behalf as their next MP and to offer them a chance at real representation.”
