OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada congratulates Green Party of New Brunswick Leader David Coon (MLA, Fredericton South) and Green MLAs Kevin Arseneau (Kent North) and Megan Mitton (Memramcook-Tantramar) on their re-election in yesterday’s New Brunswick provincial election.
“It was so exciting to see the Green vote grow. My congratulations to the Green Party of New Brunswick for all their hard work under such difficult circumstances. Even under “first past the post” Greens are winning in Canada, but it is disappointing to see New Brunswick Greens get 15 per cent of the vote and only 6 per cent of the seats.” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts.
“I’m thrilled that David, Kevin and Megan held onto their seats, clearly the hard work they’ve been doing for their constituents paid off. All 47 candidates ran impressive campaigns, many of them coming in second place, and overall garnering a significant increase in the number of Green votes. The challenges of campaigning during a pandemic are many, and yet this diverse group of individuals found unique ways to communicate their message to New Brunswickers. I’m so proud of them all and honoured to be part of the growing Green family here in Canada, and around the world.”
Green parliamentary leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) said: “In an election where the Conservatives made big gains through the cynical, opportunistic use of a snap election in a pandemic, and in which the Liberal leader, prominent former Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers, did not win his own seat, David Coon's achievement and that of the whole NB Green team should not be under-estimated. The entire Green caucus was re-elected with strong public support. I have so much respect for all the NB Greens, and our own New Brunswick-based federal Green MP- Jenica Atwin - who also campaigned alongside our provincial cousins. Job well done!"
“Greens in New Brunswick have a lot to be proud of, including that trust in Greens continues to grow,” said Jenica Atwin (MP, Fredericton). “I will continue working alongside my provincial counterparts across party lines to represent our shared constituents: fighting climate change, keeping Clinic554 open, bringing mental health resources into our communities, and supporting those living in poverty. We must remain united as New Brunswickers in the face of these challenges.”
