The Green Party of Canada applauds Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) for its bold statement on climate change this week. HRM councillors voted unanimously in favour of a motion proposed by City Councillor and Green Party climate critic, Richard Zurawski, declaring that climate change “constitutes an emergency” for Halifax.
“It’s overwhelming and incontestable,” said Zurawski during Tuesday’s debate.
Halifax is the second major Canadian city to adopt measures to mitigate the impending threat of climate change. In a similar move earlier this month, Vancouver city councillors voted unanimously to join Los Angeles and London in declaring a climate emergency. Eight members of the Vancouver City Council Green caucus, led by former Green Party Deputy leader Adriane Carr, are helping to drive climate action there. The evidence is mounting and Canadians are responding by urging their representatives to take measures to protect their communities.
“The time for action is now. People recognize the threat of climate change to their communities and are supporting policies that reflect this,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands)., “In line with the Green Party’s bold climate action policies, the Halifax motion calls for “net zero carbon emissions before 2050.”
