Greens outraged as Conservative Senator tries to kill Transgender Rights Bill

Elizabeth May calls on the Senate to reject Committee’s amendments

(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, appeals to the Senate to reject the amendments adopted by the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs after being put forward by Conservative Senator Don Plett. Ms. May has also called to have the bill pass without amendments.

“The Conservative Senator’s amendments to Bill C-279 are shockingly ignorant,” said May. “After so many Conservative MPs voted to pass this bill, the Senate Conservatives are preparing to vote against the elected members of the House of Commons.”

Bill C-279 would guarantee protection from discrimination on the basis of gender identity in the Canadian Human Rights Act. It would also introduce protections for transgender people against hate crimes within the Criminal Code. The bill is sponsored by Randall Garrison, Member of Parliament for Esquimalt – Juan de Fuca.

“Canadians should be outraged that Conservative Senators will try to kill a bill that would give the necessary protections to transgender people,” concluded Elizabeth May.
