Green Party Congratulates Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers on his appointment as Ambassador to Ireland

(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands, today congratulated Kevin Vickers, Sergeant at Arms for the House of Commons, on his appointment as Ambassador to Ireland.

“I know that Kevin Vickers will bring the same professionalism, dedication, and insight in his new role as Ambassador of Ireland as he did while serving as the Sergeant at Arms for the House of Commons,” said Ms. May. “I am proud to call him my friend and I wish him all the success in his new role.”

In his role as Sergeant at Arms, Mr. Vickers directed security on Parliament Hill. He promised that as long as he served, ‘no wall would be built’ around Canada’s Parliament, giving Canadians unparalleled access to their nation’s history. He was hailed as a hero for his role in defending Parliament on October 22, 2014, when a lone gunman breached the security of Parliament Hill.

Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North, added that Mr. Vickers will be greatly missed on Parliament Hill.

“We are all proud of Kevin Vickers, who is both a real Canadian and a real hero,” stated Mr. Hyer. “We know he will represent us with honour and distinction wherever and whenever he serves us.”

“While he will likely be busy in his new role, I sincerely hope that Kevin Vickers will also be able to enjoy the wonderful culture that Ireland has to offer,” concluded Ms. May.
