“Caroline Lucas is a shining example of the good that an MP can do as a voice for disenfranchised communities,” Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada
(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada congratulates Caroline Lucas, the United Kingdom Green Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Brighton-Pavilion, for being named ‘MP of the Year’.
Ms. Lucas was presented with the reward in recognition of her extensive work in representing and engaging minority and deprived communities within the democratic process.
“Caroline Lucas is a shining example of the good that a MP can do as a voice for disenfranchised communities,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. “She has demonstrated over and over again that she is an incredibly thoughtful, caring, and ethical representative for the people of Brighton-Pavilion who has brought a strong voice for environmental and social issues to the Parliament of Westminster.”
Elected as the first Leader Green Party of England and Wales from 2008 to 2012, Caroline has had an extensive history in being a voice for her constituents, serving as a counsellor on the Oxfordshire County Council from 1993 to 1997 and as a Member of the European Parliament for South-East England from 1999 to 2010. She won her seat in Brighton-Pavilion in 2010 and has received accolades from all parties for her extensive engagement in her community. She has won numerous awards, including The Observer’s Politician of the Year three times in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
“Caroline has continuously demonstrated her commitment to her community and improving the original model of Westminster Parliamentary Democracy,” added Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North. “Isn't it wonderful to see that Elizabeth May, Canada's first Green to win Parliamentarian of the year and now UK's sole Green MP, Caroline Lucas is now MP of the year!"
“I believe this is happening because Greens lead by example, and both Caroline and Elizabeth has certainly exemplified their party’s commitment to strong principles and bold ideas.”
