Green Party Past President and Arctic Scientist Wins Seat in Whitehorse

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada sends sincere congratulations to new Whitehorse City Councillor John Streicker.

John is an Arctic scientist and community advocate. He is the past President of the Green Party of Canada. He serves as the advocate for Arctic and Northern Affairs with the Green Party. John also co-chaired the past three national conventions of the GPC.

“This is a great victory for John and the Green movement across Canada. I have seen him work as President of our party and I can tell citizens of Whitehorse they have elected a hard-working, positive and dedicated councillor,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands.

“I am also happy to see that voter turnout went up to 43%, up from 36% at the last elections. Voters are tired of voting against something. When a positive candidate like John is in the race, people go to the polls with enthusiasm,” added May. “John told me that he was working to try and increase voter turnout”.

Unofficial elections results show that of the 5,530 ballots cast, John Streicker earned 2,963 votes, which is nearly 54%.
