Progress and Compromise in AWA LCA

Elizabeth May

Guatamala is ready to adopt this document. I wonder when we are going to stop talking and start taking decisons? We are not ready to lose on on this opportunity.

Colombia considers this document in a positive light with a more ambitious approach to mitigation. Showing flexibility is the only way to reach consensus. We think we have consensus.

Consensus does not mean giving a veto to one country. (Thunderous applause!)

Having no agreement is a threat to mankind. We request that the document be approved.

We recognize the intention of the parties to find progress after these long hours. We ask the document be accepted.

Egypt:
The clarification I received is still confusing ....but please do go ahead and approve the document.

Gabon:
The text is not perfect, but it offers us a positive perspective. As we left Copenhagen. Many were frustrated. The Mexican president made a huge effort. The Standing ovation reflects the will of the population.  Consensus does not give one nation the right of veto and we would want to create such a precedent. Africa is very vulnerable, with climate change affecting us day after day.  We cannot afford to wait.

The text was then passed and this was met with thunderous applause.
